Jan Wurm

For Jan Wurm, art is a way of being in the world, and it is a way of making sense of the world. Drawing is a way of recording the emotions and devotion within her family. It is the place for processing the experiences out in the community. And it is the laboratory in which images are distilled to reflect society and its manners. As a social creature, daily encounters and thought-shifting conversations are all brought back into the studio for processing. That engagement stimulates and propels an exploratory expression in visual terms. During this long period of severe isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been difficult to reconcile the absolute silence of the sheltering room with the unrelieved disaster that permeates from without. The full impact on her work will become clearer with time; yet, in the immediate, there is a greying of tone through a probing graphite line of self-rendering: the only model in the room.
