In this course participants will learn about the accuracy of the Alere Determine HIV-1/2 Ag/Ab Combo Test technology including quality assurance requirements, result interpretation, and basic universal precautions. The significance of antigen-reactive tests and how to describe the results. Includes trainer demonstration, participant practices, and evaluation of: fingerstick sample collection skills; test administration, and results interpretation skills.

This interactive training introduces participants with minimal familiarity with HIV/AIDS, to the history of the disease, its transmission and prevention, as well as the rise of effective treatment and biomedical prevention methods. Familiarizes participants with the role that social determinants of health and stigma have played in shaping the U.S. epidemic and includes current trends in the epidemic.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a counseling approach proven to help people change potentially harmful behaviors. Participants will gain skills and confidence in client-centered techniques of MI, including open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries. We will focus on two challenging situations: clients who seem ambivalent about change, (those who are pulled between wanting to change and not wanting to change a problematic behavior) and second, clients who express resistance or resentment.

To date, there are two crucial biomedical HIV prevention strategies: pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP). Participants will learn to answer basic questions about PrEP and nPEP; to explore their own values and biases regarding these strategies; to help clients consider whether PrEP and nPEP are for them; and to facilitate referrals to PrEP and nPEP navigators and prescribers.

This course will enhance HIV test providers’ ability to identify and understand the impact of HIV-related stigma and discrimination on clients. Participants will examine their own experiences with stigma, practice ways to create safer, less stigmatizing testing environments, and develop strategies to help clients respond to stigmatizing experiences.
