Katja Leibenath

Katja Leibenath’s paintings are figurative abstractions of the human form. She paints from her photographs, sketches and plein air renderings captured during her frequent travels. She translates this material to in-studio oil paintings that she builds over the course of many months. During the painting process the original object becomes obscured and less important, allowing something new and separate to emerge. The final painting is a record of her relationship to the process of painting itself and marks the moment where she feels the subject becomes an object. It is at this intersection her work makes a connection with the viewer. Leibenath was born and raised in Germany and has been painting in San Francisco for more than 15 years. She was schooled in architecture and art. Her work is part of public and private collection internationally. Her work is exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta and San Francisco.
